In Eastern Germany there is an old, nearly forgotten style of wheat beer known as Gose (pronounced “goes-uh”). Traditionally brewed with Coriander and Salt and fermented to produce a slight sourness, this beer has a tart, refreshing finish. Our version uses German “Sauermalz” and a little Caraway to go along with the Coriander and just a touch of Sea Salt. The result is a crisp, refreshing wheat ale that is just the thing when you are “out and about” on a warm day.

There was a time here in Cincinnati when the style that we call “Gose” was foreign to the average beer drinker.  It’s not quite that way anymore…but the ‘pioneer’ of it here in town was Blank Slate’s Out and About.  Even now with Goses pushing the limits of sourness, and being spiked with all sorts of sweet fruits – I find this beer to remain a steady constant and one that I use as a benchmark to what I think the style is supposed to taste like.

My Thoughts On Blank Slate Out and About

Refreshing.  If you had to come up with one word to wrap this beer up into, refreshing seems to nail it perfectly.  The addition of sea salt just comes through enough in the finish to make this crisp and clean, begging for another sip.  This is a beer for extended day drinking, which seems to always be the best time to drink in my experience.

Blank Slate does this the way they feel the style is supposed to be represented – it’s balanced but remains nuanced with every bit of character that Gose fans have come to crave in their latest trendy Goses from around the country.

The decision to put this into cans right off the bat in their can series is a brilliant one, it’s made the dog days of summer that much more enjoyable for people all across Cincinnati, and will most certainly do it for years to come.
