March First’s Astra Hard Seltzer is an absolute juggernaut of a brand. It’s funny to think back to how it all started, now – because it’s clear that they had no idea how successful it was going to be.
If you look back to the beginning of March First’s seltzer program, it was a bit of an experiment. They released a couple of flavors in their taproom (This was when Saturn Peach made its debut) in November of 2018. When taproom fans quickly let the brewery know that they needed more of this. They shifted gears, and slowly scaled up.
Saturn Peach first hit bottles in December of 2018 to rave reviews… but a bottled seltzer just didn’t fit in with the marketplace (they didn’t have canning options at the time) – so while they were clearly on to something, it just wasn’t clicking quite yet.
Astra Hard Seltzer Gets Canned
Then, in December of 2019, it hit the fan. March First rebranded their seltzer line as Astra, pumped them into standard 12oz cans… and people started turning their heads. This new brand changed things up a bit and gave the seltzer a distinct identity. The Astra brand pays homage to all the Ohioans who have been pioneers in space travel. (It’s wild, but Ohioans have logged more than 22,000 hours of space travel).
Then… a year later in December of 2020 Astra made its way into the slim 12oz cans that this city has come to know and love. This is where things exploded. Seltzer fans lost their minds as the brewery not only started the new cans but rolled out flavors that changed what people were thinking of when they thought of seltzer.
We now see Astra doubling down on the nostalgia, the candy and soda-like flavors that they have become known for. But if you want to count on one thing, you can rest assured with the fact that March First is comfortable with trying new things and finding what works, and what folks want. The future for Astra Hard Seltzer is anything but set in stone!
Astra Hard Seltzer Flavors
Note: These are the flavors that they’ve done – that doesn’t mean they’re all in packaging. Truth be told, most of these didn’t and won’t ever hit any form of packaging (who makes a corner brownie seltzer?) – but they’re fun. If you ever want to try some of the limited, wild stuff – make sure you keep your eyes peeled for March First’s Seltzer Smash each year where they make some of the really fun stuff.
