It’s been a long time coming, but Sycamore Distilling (That’s the distillery side of March First Brewing) has finally announced the upcoming release of their first gin, dubbed Red Sky.

You can bet that once I get my hands on it, I’ll have some more detailed tasting notes – but what you need to know right now is that this has been in the works for a LONG time.

What’s Been The Hold Up?

Think about the task at hand when you develop something like gin… the base spirit is “relatively” simple to develop. You need a vodka… clean, but with some body to it. While it might not really be easy to do – in the process of a gin’s birth, it’s definitely the easy part of it all.

Where you get into the crazy stuff is with all the stuff that gets added to it to make it ‘gin’. You’ve gotta distill a product using various techniques (there’s multiple ways to incorporate those flavors into the product) not just trying to figure out what ingredients you want to include, but what amounts of each. You can’t just put a dash of this, and a splash of that and taste it… you’ve gotta run a new batch of distillate to test out what it tastes like.

The task is daunting – but I have a lot of faith that the folks over at March First have nailed something that we can all be proud of.

What’s Inside It?

Through their literal years of development, they didn’t want to stray too far from tradition with Red Sky. It’s made using juniper berries, angelica root, caraway, and coriander. There are lot of things that you can do with a gin – and it’s easy to drift pretty far away from what “gin” means to a consumer. I think that it’s a smart move to go with traditional ingredients (at least for this first release… who knows what could come later down the line.)

The distillery has officially announced this one (unlike some other stuff that I’d like to show you guys soon…) which means it’s coming pretty soon. While they haven’t announced an official date, yet, when they do I’ll let you know right here.
