It’s a great way to celebrate bock season, if you ask me – Del Hall only drinks beer for the 46 days of Lent, and uses it to help give back to a great cause. It has spawned several folks around the globe to try their own ”beer fast” but make no mistake about it, Del is definitely the original, kicking off his fast for the first time in 2019.
It’s in some ways an homage to the monks who used to fast during Lent – and in other ways it’s just a fun way to celebrate the season (and his love for craft beer). Either way… you should be following him along in his journey.
About The Fast
Del’s fast kicks off on Wednesday, March 2nd and goes for the entirety of Lent, wrapping up on April 17th for Easter. It’s not like he just drinks a bunch of beer, though – he drinks ONLY beer. Every calorie that he consumes is coming from it.
He’s been doing this “Stunt” for a few years now, and while he admits that he does gain some of the weight that he drops during the year, he loses more each year. In fact, if things continue the way that they have been, he’s set to have dropped more than 100 pounds since he started this in the beginning.
When I’ve talked to Del in the past about this, he said that the fast isn’t ‘that hard’ – as long as you can get past the hunger pains in the very beginning of it. It doesn’t help that he’s surrounded by great beer, either – though. Del is one of the owners of Mason’s 16 Lots Brewery – so he has access to some great stuff to help him keep that calorie count up a little bit.
The Fundraiser
If you know Del (or craft beer in general) you’ll know that you can’t just do an event like this without finding a way to work some way to give back in it. This year, he’s teaming up with the Ken Anderson Alliance for donations during his fast. The Ken Anderson Alliance has been doing an incredible job over the years here in Cincinnati to help adults with disabilities – and the help that Del, and 16 Lots have been able to give them, only makes their job easier.
The whole thing, like I mentioned, ends on Easter weekend. To help mark the end of the event (and raise some more cash) Del is going to be joined by other brewery reps, bars, restaurants and corporate partners from the region to do a walk around Paul Brown stadium (they’re gonna do 14 laps in honor of Ken Anderson’s number when he was a Bengal)
