I love this place.
At first glance, it’s easy to make fun of King Corona. The space looks and feels a little bit like Agave and Rye had a baby with a Tumbleweed (are those still around?) – but hang in there with me. It’s worth it.
What To Expect From King Corona
Walking up to the building, it feels a little… strange. The place is battling some identity issues. It used to be a couple of different casual dining restaurants, but it still has that look to it. When you step through the door, though, you’re hit over the head with a ton of neon lights, bright, sparkling “things,” and loud music.
It catches you off-guard.
The menu is massive, packed with a huge list of cocktails and a blend of Latin-inspired dishes mixed with very non-traditional sushi plates.
Be ready to be confused.
The room (and even the bathrooms) have a large selection of inspirational neon signs that will make you want to achieve something incredible – which is pretty wild when you just wanna grab some dinner and a couple of drinks.
The Menu
I mentioned before that the menu at King Corona is a little wild, just like everything else about the place. I always start with a cocktail, and on their list are more than thirty different options for you to try. A full tap list of craft (and macro) beer is available, making sure you’re a little overwhelmed before you even get to the food.
The food menu is just as massive. I’ve had everything from tacos to a sushi roll made with hot Cheetos. It’s all just as strange as you hope that it will be. In fact – let me walk you through one of my meals that I had there recently.
I started my evening with a tasty cocktail: a KY Maple Sour, which takes Woodford Reserve and hits it with maple syrup, lime juice, and Angostura bitters. Sweet and boozy, with just a little tart snap to cut through it. It was amazing. The first part of my meal (I always have trouble deciding) was a sushi roll. I went with a Sausage Brisket Roll… yes… it’s a thing. They take a sausage brisket (or sausage made with brisket… I don’t know) and roll it up with pickled jalapeños, roasted peppers, and crispy onions and then top it off with a drizzle of yum yum sauce. Since I am indecisive and insane, I followed that up with the pork belly bites. They’re little crispy pops of fatty goodness served with pico de gallo and salsa – and 100% make one of the best little snacks I’ve ever had.
Like I said… It’s always confusing trying to decide what to order.
Here’s The Thing
It’s all freaking great. I’m not saying you’re pleasantly surprised that it’s “ok” – no… it’s really, really great. The cocktails are solid, the beer list is on point, the people are super nice – and EVERYTHING that I’ve ever ordered off their menu is spectacular.
This spot continues to blow me away every time I swing by. Go freaking figure.
If you’re looking for a date night, or maybe just a fun place for a group of friends to gather and have a bunch of drinks and split a bunch of small plates of stuff – this is 100% one of the absolute tops of my list if you’re in the area.
Prove me wrong.
