While the brewery doesn’t have a commercial description of this beer available, I can tell you that one sniff of their barbecue food partner’s food when you walk in the brewery door will tell you all you need to know about the inspiration of this beer.
They first brewed it up to celebrate the opening of Drunken Hog’s kitchen in the Wooden Cask taproom, and I have to say that it was an absolute home run. They released it on draft and in six packs on 12/27/19 – and had a few draft only variants available that day… but this beer (to me) shines just with a big glass and a plate of smoky barbecue.
My Thoughts on Drunken Hog Smoked Porter
The beer is a big, heavy, dark looking beer with a thick tan head on top when you pour it out. Aromas immediately start to fill the space around the bottle. Smoky, sweet chocolate and roasty smells hit my nose pretty quickly.
The beer knocks it out of the park as a companion to some great barbecue. It’s roastiness pairs up perfect with a sweet barbecue sauce, and the smoky meat pulls the smoked malt out of the beer really nicely.
It’s not over the top on anything, instead playing with a balance of all the aspects that you love about it, not too smoky, not too boozy – really well executed.
