Brewery – Taft’s
Beer – Double Gavel Banger
Style – Double IPA
ABV – 8.3% ABV
IBUS – 75

Our flagship IPA made bigger for the biggest president. American DIPA filled with All-American hops, notes of citrus and tropical fruit, and patriotism.

Taft’s took what is already a phenomenal IPA and kicked it up a notch or two with Double Gavel Banger. The beer was released with limited draft and cans from both their taprooms in Cincy in June of 2020 and certainly got some folks talking loudly when they did. The “little brother beer”, Gavel Banger has won over this city taking the spot of “Cincinnati’s Favorite Beer” in online polling in previous years, and the choice to kick it up a notch for the hot summer months, and upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend was pretty brilliant.

My Thoughts On Double Gavel Banger

When you first pour the beer in your glass, you’re greeted by a brilliantly copper/orange colored brew. A thick, foamy off white head sits on top of your glass and fires off aromas of fresh citrus and tropical fruit.

When I taste the beer I immediately get a smack of bitter hops, which quickly are torn aside for a big, fruity citrus snap and a soft melon sweetness the rolls along all the sides of my mouth. Just as you’re getting used to the taste, a bitter hop crash comes rolling back through on the backend leaving your palate itching for more. This beer is an absolute blast, and an awesome example of what a Double IPA can be.

Double Gavel Banger takes all the things that you love about the original and turns it up a few notches, while still keeping everything contained in a package that is surprisingly drinkable. I’m blown away, and impressed to say the least.

Double Gavel Banger on Prost!

Note: This beer was provided for me from Taft’s Brewing Company. That doesn’t mean that it changes my thoughts on the beer, it just means that I will write about it. If you want to reach out about getting me a drink that you’d like me to write about, it’s easy!

  1. A great beer, no doubt about it. A little sweet for my taste, but perfect for winter — Christmas all year round. Malty sweetness does not cancel a good hop bite. In fact, the numbers are just right: IBUs almost exactly 9X the %ABV. I would enjoy seeing a little more technical description in the write-ups — hop varieties used, crystal malts (probably over the mythical 5%) and so on.

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I usually try to add some of the more technical stuff when it’s easily accessible via brewery’s notes etc. otherwise I usually just keep it to my impressions (usually my first impression when I try it for the first time).

      I appreciate the feedback! Cheers!!
