Urban Artifact's Astronaut Food beer, featuring blackberry and raspberry freeze dried fruit.

Brewery – Urban Artifact
Beer – Blackberry and Raspberry Astronaut Food
Style – Fruited Sour
ABV – 15%

This debut release in our new line of beers contains 600 lbs of freeze-dried red raspberries and 400 lbs of freeze-dried blackberries per 1,000 gallon batch. This is the equivalent of roughly 11,000 lbs of fruit when fresh!

You’ve never had a beer like this before. These guys packed more fruit into these tiny little cans than I think anyone has ever done before. When I first wrote about Astronaut Food, I talked a lot about the ingenuity of it. I think the idea itself behind the beer is worthy of a conversation. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about the actual beer, though.

This first hit shelves on 3/17/21 after a long process of test batching and experimenting. The brewery worked for years on a series that they called their code name: colors – it was all a long process to release this – Astronaut Food.

They used freeze-dried fruit in their beer to literally pack in more real fruit than they physically could have without the process. It comes out to roughly the equivalent of 11,000 pounds of fruit per 1,000 gallons. It’s insane how much fruit that is. There’s so much fruit in a can of this beer that when the brewery released the Blackberry and Blueberry version of it in 2022 they went as far as to say that it was the most expensive beer (per ingredient cost)

About Urban Artifact’s Blackberry and Raspberry Astronaut Food

This beer pours a deep, dark purple in my glass. It doesn’t have a real head on it, but that’s to be expected with a 15% beer that this much fruit in it.

Aromas are Jammy, bright berries (surprise… it smells a bit like blackberry and raspberry)

The taste is insane – it’s definitely got a little something different to it than non-freeze-dried fruit, a little “snap” of harsh bite. Big, bold berry fills out the taste, and the flavor drifts around your mouth and nose well after you’ve finished your sip.

This beer is intense… it’s fruity to a new level. It’s wild.
